Soccer Giant Dribbling Drill

  • Dribble into space with speed and purpose.
  • 1v1s – Be brave and creative – If faced with the coach, can the player use their skill to beat the defender/coach?
  • Awareness – Keep your head up when dribbling.
  • 4 different color corner areas are ‘safe zones’ for the players from the ‘soccer giant’ coach.
  • The players free dribble.
  • The coach then calls out a color.
  • Players have to dribble to that color.
  • The coach applies semi-opposed (pressure, but no tackling) pressure but allows the players to all make it to the zone.
  • Soccer Giant/Zombie/Monster noises and actions are a must! The coach should encourage throughout and push the players of different abilities – the coach is the defender to ensure the pressure or defending to give the players as much success and confidence with dribbling as possible.
  • 15x15yd area. This field should be adjusted based on the skill level and the number of players participating.
  • 4 different color coordinated zones marked by cones, pennies, or flat markers in each corner.
  • One ball per player.

Players need to be able to change speed and direction to take a player on in a game, have awareness, be direct, and dribble with a purpose to goal (the zones).

If the players are confident and doing well, you can introduce a points system.

  • 3 points for getting in the zone first.
  • 1 point for making it into the zone.
  • -1 for going out of the playing area.

Suggestion –  don’t follow the points too strictly and allow the kids to be creative with points scoring.

As the defender, the coach can challenge certain players dribbling skills – personalizing the experience for each player.
