The Lob Header & The Lob Header Pass

Sometimes when you receive the ball the best option is not to trap it, but to use one touch and keep it moving. Either to pass to a teammate or to use the momentum of the ball to beat a defender. With this trick, you will use your head to lob the ball past your opponent.

The Lob Header

Step 1

When the soccer ball is played to you in the air and you are covered by a defender. Position your body in front of the opposing player.

Step 2

Watch the flight of the high ball carefully as it flies through the air and get into a position so that the ball will come down directly on your head.

Step 3

Bend your knees and then push up with your legs to make solid contact with the soccer ball so the ball flies backwards over your opponent.

Step 4

While the ball is in the air, roll off the defender by dropping your shoulder and turning around so that you are now past the defender and can play the ball. Now you’re free to pass the ball, dribble, or shoot the ball!

Extra Tip: The Lob Header Pass

This technique can also be used to pass to a teammate who is on the other side of the defender.
